Nevada Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Petition

This section summarizes the petition process for Nevada WICHE participants under NRS 397 and NAC 397 (R188-22AP).
Legal Authority
This section provides the statutory and regulatory basis for petitions under Nevada law.
Nevada WICHE participants may petition the Nevada WICHE Commission for the following types of petitions
- Reduction of required practice period; (NRS 397.0685;NAC 397.020)
- Extension of time to complete required practice (NRS 397.069; NAC 397.030)
- Exemption of practice requirement due to hardship (NRS 397.069)
- Extension for repayment (NRS 397.069)
- Reduction of principal balance due to hardship (NRS 397.0685)
Eligibility Criteria
This section explains the conditions you must meet to qualify for petition consideration.
- For reduction of the period required practice petition must contain reasons and support documentation.
- Participants must have practiced for not less than one year in the profession for which they were awarded the degree, certificate or similar credential.
- Participants practice must have been in a rural area of the State with one-half overall practice time by participant being spent in a rural area or a full-time employee of the State of Nevada.
- If petition approved the Commission can grant a reduction of the period of required practice for good cause, including, without limitation for military service; service in the Peace Corps or the AmeriCorps Scholarship Program; participation in the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program; continuation of education in the field of study or specialization of the petitioner; interruption of study due to financial hardship; illness; failure to fulfill any professional licensing requirement; or any other circumstance deemed appropriate by the Commission. If Commission approves a petition, it cannot be reduced by more than one year.
- For extension of the period for completing the required practice beyond 5 years as prescribed by NRS 397.0645.
- Participants must submit a petition with reasons and support documentation to the Commission before the period has expired.
- If petition approved the Commission can grant an extension for good cause, including, without limitation for military service; service in the Peace Corps or the AmeriCorps Scholarship Program; participation in the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program; continuation of education in the field of study or specialization of the petitioner; interruption of study due to financial hardship; illness; failure to fulfill any professional licensing requirement; or any other circumstance deemed appropriate by the Commission.
- For extension of repayment not later than 120 days after the date on which default on the repayment occurs must contain reasons and support documentation.
- If petition approved the Commission can grant an extension for good cause, including, without limitation for military service; service in the Peace Corps or the AmeriCorps Scholarship Program; participation in the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program; continuation of education in the field of study or specialization of the petitioner; interruption of study due to financial hardship; illness; failure to fulfill any professional licensing requirement; or any other circumstance deemed appropriate by the Commission.
- To apply for reduction of the principal balance of a stipend that is converted to a loan because of hardship petition must contain reasons and support documentation.
Submission and Appeals

- If petition is denied, participant may appeal in writing within 10 days of receipt of denial notice (NAC 397.020) via online Nevada WICHE Petition form
